By this the love of God was manifested in us, that God has sent His only begotten Son into the world so that we might live through Him.
1John 4:9
I remember…I remember the day the Challenger space shuttle exploded shortly after take-off and the seven astronauts died. I watched from a reception area on the 2nd floor with picture windows to the north. You knew they could not survive, and from what I’ve read, some of the astronauts may have died upon impact with the ocean at 207 mph. It made me sick.
We all have friends and relatives who work in dangerous occupations—people who do not focus on the danger. Yet, those people do their work each and every day.
Personally, I’ve never been very brave—no daring temperament here! I don’t like to do things which put me at risk. Driving 10 miles an hour over the speed limit on I-95 is as risky as it gets for me.
What would we do without those few who are willing to face danger every day? What would we do without Jesus? He did not have to die for us. He chose the walk to Jerusalem. He chose to be silent before his accusers. He chose to take all of our sins upon his shoulders and to suffer a terrible horrible death upon the cross to set us free.
God sacrificed his only son; Jesus accepted the riskiest job of all.
Compared to this, our job is easy. We can confidently accept the opportunities and changes within our church family knowing that Jesus has already done all the hard work.
Blessings,
