Many people, especially in South Florida have never hear of the "Disciples" but with a rich tradition of over 150 years some of the notable members of our church might surprise you .
3 United States Presidents
James A. Garfield - the 20th President - (Term of Office - March 1881- Sept. 1881) - Garfield was an ordained Disciples minister who began his career as a teacher at Hiram College in Ohio. At Hiram he studied law, later served as the college's president and preached an occasional sermon at the Disciples of Christ church where he was a member. Prior to being named President, Garfield spent a number of years as a member of the Ohio State Legislature, and the U.S. House of Representatives.
Lyndon B. Johnson - the 36th President - (Term of Office - 1963-1969) - Johnson was a member of National City Christian Church (Disciples of Christ) in Washington, D.C. His funeral was held at National City on Jan. 25, 1973. He also regarded the First Christian Church in Johnson City, Texas as his "home church."
Ronald Reagan - the 40th President - (Term of Office - 1981-1989) - Ronald Reagan was raised as a Disciple in his native Illinois as a young man by his mother, who was a devout member of the Christian Church (Disciples of Christ). He graduated from Eureka College in Eureka, Ill. which is affiliated with Disciples.
