As most of you know, I have always been a lover of language and words. But recently, I have found that one word stands out as the most important, the most beloved and the most cherished of all and that word is “Grandma.” It is amazing how many words (in Spanish and in English!) my grandson Nicolas has learned since I last saw him in April. However, up to now, not one of them has been Grandma.
If you asked him who was Grandma, he would point at me, so I knew he knew who I was, but he had never said the magic word until just a few days ago. I was going out and he waved good-bye to me and said, “bye bye, ‘Anma’”, which was close enough for me. I have to tell you, my heart melted and I have never felt so loved in my whole entire life!
And this got me to wondering. What is it about a grandchild’s love that is so special and unique – different from most other loves you have ever known? And I came to the conclusion that it must be the fact that the love between grandparents and grandchildren is unconditional and that most people you know do not love you just because you are you or even because you show up and are there for them. And when you do show up, your grandchild doesn’t care if you are dressed up or still in pajamas while playing their favorite game or reading a bedtime story. They don’t care if you are short or tall, heavy or slim, rich or poor. Because they see the only thing that is
important to them and that is the condition of your heart. They love the way God loves; the way God wants us to love with no conditions, no prejudices, and no judgment. God wants us to always have the kind of love you feel in your heart when you hear the word, “Grandma!” Sweet and simple , with no strings attached!
