John 8:2-11
Revised Standard Version
2 Early in the morning he came again to the temple; all the people came to him, and he sat down and taught them. 3 The scribes and the Pharisees brought a woman who had been caught in adultery, and placing her in the midst 4 they said to him, “Teacher, this woman has been caught in the act of adultery. 5 Now in the law Moses commanded us to stone such. What do you say about her?” 6 This they said to test him, that they might have some charge to bring against him. Jesus bent down and wrote with his finger on the ground. 7 And as they continued to ask him, he stood up and said to them, “Let him who is without sin among you be the first to throw a stone at her.” 8 And once more he bent down and wrote with his finger on the ground. 9 But when they heard it, they went away, one by one, beginning with the eldest, and Jesus was left alone with the woman standing before him. 10 Jesus looked up and said to her, “Woman, where are they? Has no one condemned you?” 11 She said, “No one, Lord.” And Jesus said, “Neither do I condemn you; go, and do not sin again.”[a]
Pastor Donn,
As always, your Bible Study was very informative and I learned new (to me) information. Thank you!
Make no mistake! Jesus does not like sin. We see that in his last statement.
But he recognizes all of us earthly vessels our feet of clay and are therefore not qualified to be the judge, jury nor the executioner it comes to other peoples sin.
Each of us, by the revelation Holy Spirit knows exactly what our sins are. Notice Jesus did not recount her sins. Our hearts are the judge, jury and executioner for our sins. For them, we suffer come out right here on earth and suffered a degree of apartness from the Lord, not because that is what he wants because that is what he thinks we deserve, but because that is the inevitable consequence. The crime is, in fact, the punishment.
Lesson from Jesus here to me is thatI have no business judging other people. I must listen to the spirit as it takes my thoughts prisoner and guides me in the path Jesus taught. I am doing that, my time and energy are all used up.
Remember the verse John 8:12, found only in the aCROCKcrappee: There yet remained one person, looking, looking, and holding a rock. Jesus smiled with compassion and love and said: “Mom, you put that rock down…”
